Reflection
The program management and administration of the school library media program is a vital part of the media specialist’s job. In order for the media program to be effective and useful to the patrons it serves, it must be run efficiently, and it is the media specialist’s job to ensure that this is accomplished. Throughout my graduate program, I have completed several tasks to further my ability to competently run a library media program.
In FRIT 7331 (Leadership of the School Library Media Program), I developed an entire Strategic Management Plan for the Nahunta Primary School Media Center. I began with a contextual analysis of the learning community, wrote a mission statement, and developed the philosophy on which to base the school library program. I completed an overview of the current media center services and facilities and identified the budget sources available to the program. Next, I completed a stakeholder survey to identify ways teacher were currently using the media center and what they would like to see added to the media center program. I also identified short-range and long-range goals to improve the program and continue to move it forward.
In FRIT 7134 (Collection Development and Organization), I completed a Collection Development Plan. I began the plan with an environmental scan and a curriculum review. Next, I evaluated the collection. I accomplished this by checking lists, examining the collection directly, performing an age analysis, and performing a circulation study. After this was completed, I put together a consideration file of resources to purchase to supplement the current materials available in the media center.
During my practicum, I was able to demonstrate my ability in this area is two ways. First, I put together a draft grant application for grant that supplied funds for collection development and expansion. I also completed a self-evaluation of the media center program based on the GLMA and GLA Library Media Program Self-Evaluation Rubric. I summarized the results of this self-evaluation in a Memo to the Principal and identified an action plan to move each area of the media center program rated as basic up to proficient. I also worked with the media specialist to develop an action plan to move one area of the media center program from proficient to exemplary.
