Reflection
Developing an early love for reading is a trait that will benefit students throughout their entire academic career. Media specialists can foster this love for reading in students by providing them with high-quality, up-to-date materials, organizing book talks, matching reading materials with student interests, and providing reading materials in multiple formats including digital forms. Media specialists should stay current on trends in young adult and children’s literature so that they can provide the best possible service to their students.
For FRIT 7230 (Selection and Development of Instructional Technologies), I created a Digital Video to promote reading at the local primary school. The video was titled “Nahunta Primary Loves to Read!” and featured interviews with students and teachers highlighting some of their favorite children’s books. This video was designed to bring kids into the media center to check out books and show them what types of materials were available to them. The video showed the primary students that if they were interested in a specific topic such as dogs or sports then they were sure to be able to find books in the media center on their favorite topic. Media specialists can promote reading by developing digital videos such as this one, creating posters and interactive media displays, utilizing reader rewards programs, and incorporating various Web 2.0 resources into their instruction and media programs.
As part of my Practicum, I developed a Reading Enrichment Unit for a first-grade Quest (Gifted) class. They were completing a learning unit on zoos. We read a fiction and non-fiction book on the topic, discussed the non-fiction book, completed an activity associated with the book, and viewed some zoo animals live through the San Diego Zoo website. I designed this unit in a way to show students that they could read about a topic then extend the knowledge they gained through reading by discussing what they have read with others and discovering web resources as well.
