Reflection - Strategic Management Plan
A media specialist must have a strategic management plan in place to ensure that the library media program is well-run and always moving forward. The strategic management plan I created for the Nahunta Primary School media center included conducting a contextual analysis of the learning community, writing a mission statement, and defining the school library philosophy. Next, I summarized the current library services offered, described the school library facilities in detail, and outlined current budget sources available. Finally, I developed both short-range and long-range goals for the media center to put into focus ways the media center program could improve and better serve the students and staff of the Nahunta Primary School.
Task 4: Grant Application
Reflection - Grant Application
For the draft grant application task, I chose the Margaret
Edwards Collection Development Grant offered through the American Library
Association. Applying for grants is an
important part of the media specialist’s duties as program administrator of the
library program. Grants can cover gaps in the library budget for materials and
can be a great source of funding to improve the media program. However, to be
awarded grant funding, careful consideration must be given to your application.
This task made me think about and explain thoroughly exactly why our media
center needed the grant funds and how they would be used to benefit our
students.
Task 5: Program Evaluation Rubric
Reflection - Program Evaluation Rubric
Completing the GLMA and GLA Library Media Program Self-Evaluation Rubric really gave me a clear picture into how much work must be put into a library media program to make it truly exemplary. While the media center I am completing my Practicum in was proficient in many areas, the media specialist and I did identify room for improvement in several areas according to the rubric. In each area we identified as basic, I created an action plan to move the program up to proficient which should be the minimum for all areas. I believe you should not settle for proficient though when putting in the extra effort will take your media program to the exemplary level and make it the best it can be.
